My Harvard Experience

Harvard, America's oldest institute of higher education, is often attached with a reputation of attracting the smartest students in the world—students who might have gotten the highest grades and SAT scores in high school, or won several gold medals in international competitions. However, after living at Harvard for a year, I realized that this is not what Harvard is all about. While there are certainly these incredibly bright students, many people that I have met here do not strike me as particularly smart. In fact, one of my friends even claimed that many Harvard students probably would not match up against students at UC Berkeley or UCLA. So what is so special about Harvard?

Many say that Harvard is a small United Nations, or a miniature of the world, with which I cannot agree more. With amazing faculties, an extremely diverse student group, and a broad alumni base, Harvard is a place full of opportunities and possibilities. Any student here can start any club, a journal, or a conference.

The Harvard Interactive Media Group was recently started. It holds large video gaming competitions and is sponsored by Microsoft. There are also groups of all sorts---Model UN, Investment Association, Chinese Chess Club, and even a Juggling Club---anything one can think of, either it is already here or will be founded soon. This particular aspect of the student life epitomizes the Harvard education experience, as diverse as what one opens his eyes to, and as good as what one makes out of it.

And of course, what drives this place and establishes this atmosphere of “creative entrepreneurship,”are the students. Every student at Harvard is full of surprises. Even the most seemingly ordinary peer might surprise you by the story behind him/her. Only after you get to know them well do you discover their talents and visions. And it is with these precious encounters that I realize Harvard is a place where a group of ambitious and motivated students can spread their wings, using the resources Harvard offers to pursue the things they are truly passionate about.

I feel very fortunate to have the chance to be a part of this institution and I treasure every day of my life here as an exciting adventure awaits me every morning. I am also very glad to have gone to Happy Marian because it was not only a pleasant experience which settled a solid background in English for me, but it also adequately prepared me for the American education by making it familiar and natural. I'm grateful for my teachers at Happy Marian who guided me and inspired me through my early years. Moreover, I'm also grateful for my parents who made the clever choice back then and chose such a wonderful learning environment for me in Taiwan . Therefore, I encourage parents in Taiwan to make an equally intelligent choice like my parents made, which will have tremendous impact on the future of your children!
