I believe that play is a fundamental part of a child’s development. I use different methods to conduct my classes in AP2 and P5 at Happy Marian like games, activities, TPRs, songs, changes, dances, role-plays, etc. Fun games can stimulate the children’s learning atmosphere. When I play language games, I usually divide the class into two or three groups and assign each student a number. Then when I ask a question, I call out a student’s number. The student whose number has been called has to answer orally, come to the board and write the answer, and such. Teaching students to cheer for their teammates helps keep them motivated and makes the competition more exciting. Variations of games and scoring systems are important to keep the students’ interest in playing the games. I keep the scores of each team on the board throughout the day and reward the winning team with extra stickers, stamps or a privilege to have longer breaks or playtime. I also use the scoring system to re-enforce proper classroom behavior. When the students do something wrong like; speak Chinese or misbehave, I take away their points. This motivates them to remind each other to behave well; otherwise their team will lose points.
